Deconstruction 3 - Chance the Rapper

Song: 'Same Drug' By Chance the Rapper

Lyric Analysis: 

Synopsis: 

“Same Drugs” describes the relationship between Chance and a girl from his childhood. Realising that they no longer share the same interests and experiences that they did as children, Chance reflects nostalgically on their shared youth and explores his own feelings of loss around growing up. 

Timeline: 

The timeline for this music video is very repetitive, there are cut transition shots of the same location set of the singer singing in front of a green screen with a bear that soon joins in with  the singer during the video. This is the only big change and the rest of the music video consist of close up and mid shots of the singer singing whilst playing the piano. This is performance based video.

Mis en Scene: 

There is only one set location for this music video which is inside. The scene is set in front of a green screen with a pink background and in front is a piano with the actor and a bear sat next to him The shots stay the same during the whole music video and vary between close up shots and long shots. The location is very plain and may link to the song lyrics. Its more of a performance based music video than a narrative.

Costume and makeup: 

In the music video there is one male actor. He is wearing casual clothes, a denim jacket and a red cap. This is different to the other music videos i have deconstructed but connotative to  the casual lifestyle and effect its giving off.  The use of casual clothing is quite popular in the genre of Hip hop.




 Album Digipak: 

 

The Digipak front cover consists of the singer being on the front cover looking straight into the camera lens. He looks dazed out and shocked as if he has seen something which links back to the narrative of the album as a whole. The album name is shown at the top in a cool font 'ACIDRAP' which is big and is in the centre of the CD therefore attracts people to the digipak. The background of the cover is a light pink/ blue colour which looks very calm and bright. The effect of this makes the digipak stand out well and goes with the Cd itself. The CD itself is a pink colour which is quite plain and in the middle the singer and the album name is shown as well. This makes it easy to identify what the Cd is for. I could not find a back cover to the digipak.

Magazine Advertisement:

 On the magazine advertisement, the singer features in the middle of the page. This was the same for the digipak as well. As you can see, the singer is shown to be wearing the same outfit as he was in the music video i am deconstructing. His para-linguistic features shows he is looking happy. The record label is shown on the top right hand corner. There is extra information on the sides of the  magazine advertisement, in black smaller font. At the top right there is the singers name featured in a red big font to stand out from the other extra information. There is a yellow background which is bright and connotative to happiness.
